I'm going to go see "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Murat tomorrow. I am excited. In honor of this, I am going to post the lyrics to two of my favorite songs from "Phantom": "All I Ask of You" and "Music of the Night."
"All I Ask of You" is one of my favorite love songs of all time, ever. I've ended up applying it to pretty much every fandom I enjoy (Picture Carrot telling Angua "Anywhere you go, let me go too/ That's all I ask of you." Awww, right? Also Han and Leia, Eowyn and Faramir... could go on and on, really.) Here are the words to the song which has given me countless romantic delusions:
RAOUL:
No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you
Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears
I'm here, with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide you
CHRISTINE:
Say you love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summertime
Say you need me with you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true
That's all I ask of you
RAOUL:
Let me be your shelter
Let me be your light
You're safe, no one will find you
Your fears are far behind you
CHRISTINE:
All I want is freedom
A world with no more night
And you, always beside me
To hold me and to hide me
RAOUL:
Then say you'll share with me
One love, one lifetime
Let me lead you from your solitude
Say you want me with you, here beside you
Anywhere you go, let me go too
That's all I ask of you
CHRISTINE:
Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
BOTH:
Say the word and I will follow you
Share each day with me
Each night, each morning
CHRISTINE:
Say you love me
RAOUL:
You know I do
BOTH:
Love me, that's all I ask of you
Love me
That's all I ask of you
This, then, is "Music of the Night," which I think has just gorgeous lyrics. The music is beautiful too, but I can't type the music on my LJ. So, these are the lovely words. In a way, they sound to me like a temptation to the dark side: "Hear it, feel it/ Secretly possess you/ Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind/ In this darkness which you know you cannot fight." I've played this over Star Wars footage a lot before, and it looks cool, particularly when you get shots of Queen Amidala going with words like "Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world/ Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before."
Weirdly (or should it be wyrdly?) enough, I've can also see it being sung by Lady Margolotta, attempting to seduce a young Havelock Vetinari-- to get him to let her bite him so that he would stay with her, etc, etc, before she went of the b-word. (shudder) Can you imagine Vetinari as a vampire?
It's just a very dark, seductive song. I love it. Here 'tis:
Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your face away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to go
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the harmony which dreams alone can write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night
